Best premarket scanner for day trading small cap gappers
The best premarket scanner for day trading is one that streams real-time data from 4:00 ET, filters by gap %, float and premarket volume, and alerts you when a ticker crosses your levels. Trade Ideas, Scanz, StocksToTrade and Warrior Trading's Day Trade Dash all do this from $89 to $247 per month. DayTradingSoftware does it from $49 per month, or $24 billed yearly, and adds a trading journal that records the premarket scan state of every trade.
What makes a premarket scanner worth paying for
Premarket is the hardest session for a scanner. Volume is thin, quotes jump, and a ticker can gap 40% on 20,000 shares. Four things separate a scanner that helps from one that wastes your morning.
- Real-time data from 4:00 ET. A delayed or snapshot screener shows you yesterday's leaders or a list that is already 15 minutes old. Ask the vendor directly whether premarket data streams in real time on the plan you are buying.
- Gap and float filters you control. You want gap % from the prior close, float in shares, price range and premarket volume as separate filters, so you can build a list of 5 to 15 names instead of 200.
- Relative volume by time of day. Premarket volume only means something compared with what the stock normally trades at the same minute. An RVOL column is what turns a gap into a candidate.
- Alerts on levels, not only on new rows. The useful alert at 8:45 ET is "ABCD broke its premarket high on 3x volume", not "ABCD joined the list".
A fifth point matters after the open: whether you can see later which premarket conditions actually paid you. Most scanners stop at the list.
Best premarket scanners compared on price and features
Prices are from each vendor's pricing page, checked in October 2026. Check again on the day you buy, since promotions change them.
| Scanner | Monthly price | Premarket and filters | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DayTradingSoftware | $49 Starter, $149 Pro, yearly from $24 | Real-time from 4:00 ET, gap, float, RVOL, ATR, plus a journal with scan state per trade | Manual small cap traders who want scan and review in one tool |
| Trade Ideas | $127 Standard, $254 Premium, yearly from about $89 | Real-time, large library of prebuilt channels, no journal | Traders who want prebuilt scans and AI signals on Premium |
| Scanz | $89 Starter, $199 Pro | Real-time, data scans plus news and SEC filing scans, no journal | News and filings driven traders |
| StocksToTrade | $179.95, or $1,899.50 per year | Real-time scans with a filings and news panel, no journal | Newer small cap traders who use the training videos |
| Warrior Trading Day Trade Dash | $147 to $247 by simulator and membership | Real-time scanners with news and charts, no journal | Warrior Trading students who want the simulator |
| Finviz Elite | $39.50, or $299.50 per year | Premarket data from 4:00 ET in a screener you refresh, no journal | Swing traders and a quick premarket screen before work |
Two details are easy to miss. Scanz Starter runs one scan at a time with one 20 symbol watchlist, so most active traders end up on Pro at $199. Finviz Elite is a screener that you refresh, not a streaming scanner that pushes rows and alerts as they happen, which is fine for a slower routine and frustrating at 9:25 ET.
Best premarket scanner for small cap gappers
For a trader who trades low float gappers between 7:00 and 10:30 ET, the deciding filters are float under 20M shares, gap of at least 10% and RVOL above 5x. Any scanner in the table can run that. The differences are price and what happens after the trade. On our premarket gap scanner you save that list as one of 5 scans on Starter, set alerts on the premarket high, and every trade you take from it lands in the journal with its gap, float and RVOL at entry.
Best premarket scanner for news driven traders
If you trade the headline first and the chart second, a scanner with a built-in news and filings stream saves you a second screen. Scanz and StocksToTrade lead here, and Benzinga Pro is the news first option many traders pair with a separate scanner. DayTradingSoftware has no news feed, so a news trader would use it next to a news service, not instead of one.
Best premarket scanner for traders who want prebuilt scans
Trade Ideas has the largest library of ready made scan channels and, on Premium, AI signals and backtesting of those channels. It is the right pick if you want someone else's scan logic and plan to use the AI features. If you build your own three or four lists, you pay for a library you will not open. Our Trade Ideas pricing breakdown shows what each plan includes.
Best premarket scanner on a budget
Broker platforms such as thinkorswim and Webull include premarket scanners with a brokerage account. They work, but filters, alerts and saved lists are more limited, and nothing connects the scan to your trade review. A paid scanner earns its cost when it shortens the list to names you actually trade and lets you measure which ones pay. At $24 per month billed yearly, our Starter plan is the cheapest real-time option in the table.
A premarket scan that works on day one
These settings are a starting point for US small cap momentum, not a recommendation to buy anything. Adjust them after a few weeks of journal data.
| Filter | Starting value | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $2 to $20 | Liquid enough to exit, cheap enough to move |
| Gap from prior close | at least 10% | Removes ordinary drift |
| Float | under 20M shares | Supply is small, so volume moves price |
| Premarket volume | above 100,000 shares by 8:30 ET | Proves real interest, not a few prints |
| Relative volume | above 5x | Compared with the same time on normal days |
At 9:00 ET the list is usually down to 3 to 8 names. Mark the premarket high and low on each, set an alert on the high, and plan the trade before the bell. Our guide on how to find premarket gappers walks through the full 4:00 to 9:30 ET routine, and the low float scanner page explains the float filter in detail.
How to tell if your premarket scanner is paying for itself
Track two numbers for 30 trading days: how many trades came from the premarket list, and what those trades earned in R, net of commissions. If the scanner costs $149 per month and your premarket trades net less than that, the tool is not the problem, the filters or the execution are. That is the reason our journal stores the scan state with each trade. You can filter your history by gap %, float and RVOL at entry and see, for example, that gaps above 30% on floats under 5M pay before 9:45 ET and lose after 10:30 ET.
The same discipline applies to money you do not day trade. A long term basket belongs in a different tool, for example a custom weighted stock index you rebalance a few times a year, not in a premarket scan list.
